The Past and Future of Pramac Racing

One of the most important MotoGP teams are at a turning point in their respected career. Pramac Racing has been present in the industry since 2002. Over the years this group of thrill-loving individuals have been through hot and cold.

The team started with Yamahas and Hondas but their heritage lies with Ducati, they used the Bologna machines for 20 years. So, it is a shocker that the contract that Pramac signed with Yamaha lasts 7 years. What brought the team to leave Ducati? I can think of a few things: Ducati planned to reduce the number of factory GP25 bikes next year to only three (which came through because only Bagnaia, Marquez and Di Giannantonio will get the GP25). It wouldn’t sit right with me neither, if I were Campionoti or Borsoi, downsizing right after Pramac won the teams championship in 2023. But to be honest the most important achievement is the rider’s championship, in which Pramac felt and still feels like a risk looking at it from the factory’s perspective. Last year’s title run was a peculiar one for Jorge Martín: he had a chance to win with a satellite team. This hasn’t been done since 2001, when Valentino Rossi won with the Nastro Azzurro Honda.

This team had the honour to work with absolute legends of the sport, such as: Tetsuya Harada, Neil Hodgson, Mika Kallio, Aleix Espargaró, Loris Capirossi, Andrea Iannone, Danilo Petrucci, Jack Miller, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin. So how is it that Pramac is the only team left without a contracted rider for 2025. Well, of course in the current state of the Yamaha bikes, nobody is too keen to jump to the occasion, but there are only two names that linger when it comes to Pramac and 2025. Jack Miller and Miguel Oliveira, but is there anyone else that we should take into consideration? I really want to mention Remy Gardner, but he has showed that he is not capable to be even competitive with Hondas (except Stefan Bradl, the two of them could have a pretty good race, even though we wouldn’t care).

Even though the team will change their supplier from Ducati to Yamaha, I still find it amusing that the only two seats not under contract in 2025 are both Pramac seats. Even though Martín didn’t win last season, Pramac is still a great team, and as of today Martín leads this year’s championship. We might not expect it but whoever signs with them might bring some surprises next year.
